INFLUENCE OF HOME ENVIRONMENT AND SCHOOL PRACTICES ON PUPILS' ATTITUDE TOWARDS SCHOOLING IN ONDO WEST LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA

Abstract

Schooling have been one of the numerous ways to reach out to the world, world.  Besides helping children to read and write, schooling have been a form of  socialisation. However, research findings have revealed that some factors are  responsible for students' attitude towards schooling. Previous studies have focused  on students' attitude toward subjects such as mathematics, sciences, physical  education among others with little or no attention to how home environment and  school practices influence students' attitude towards schooling. This study therefore  determined the influence of home environment and school practices on students'  attitude towards schooling in Ondo West Local Government Area. The study  employed correlational survey research design. Simple random sampling technique  was used to select a sample of 199 respondents. Three self-designed instruments used  were Home Environment Questionnaire, Pupils' Attitude to Schooling Scale and  School Practices Observational Check list. The study found out that the attitude of  pupils towards schooling is positive (WA= 3.00); findings also shows that there is no  joint contribution between School practices and Home environment on attitude  towards schooling (F = 1.157; p>0.05). None of the independent variables; Home (2, 7) environment (β = 0.46; t = 1.30; p >0.05); School practices (β = -0.10; t =- 0.28; p  >0.05) contributed relatively to pupils' attitude towards schooling. It was  recommended that the home environment (parenting styles, parents' socio-economic  status) and school practices (school climate and school culture) should be improved  to maintain the positive attitude of pupils toward schooling.
